What makes Theory’s knitwear the perfect
fit for the man on the go? A seamless, exceptional fusion of intelligent design and sophistication, explains Ben Stubbington, Creative Director of Menswear, Theory.

Tell us about the knitwear Theory offers.

Sweaters in our menswear are treated many different ways and for many end-uses for the customer. They always compliment or create an outfit. We offer sweaters in all weights, gauges and stitches—16gg lightweight merino, heavy Milano stitches that work as outerwear styles, and mixed heavy stitches that have a traditional element. We also offer sweaters that work back to all areas of the customers’ lifestyles—beautiful fine gauge silk-cashmere blends, for example, that fit perfectly with our elevated tailoring in crews and turtlenecks.

What are the hallmarks of a Theory sweater?

The key elements of a Theory sweater are minimalism with clever detailing, some of which at first you might not notice. You see it in interesting construction techniques, like the tubular linking on our Bilen yarn sweater. We have also incorporated tech yarns, such as nylon in solid jerseys, and subtle patterns that are perfect for traveling with as the yarn holds form—a shake removes the creases after it’s been stuffed in your luggage. The fit, yarn and silhouette are always key to everything we produce in Theory men’s, and this is extremely important in sweaters. In creating minimal pieces like the perfect fine gauge turtleneck or crew to be worn with our tailoring, the fit has to be just right and the yarn perfect. All of our yarns are from the best sources, mainly from Italy.

Cashwool is a big part of the collection. What is cashwool?

Cashwool is a medium weight, 100% merino yarn from Zegna Baruffa, one of the top Italian yarn suppliers. Cashwool has become a staple for us. We use it in 12gg jersey, but also build the weight and construction up by adding ends of yarn. We have been running this yarn for six years. We love the hand, compactness and luster. It wears incredibly well.

So to the first-time customer, do you recommend buying cashwool?

I would recommend cashwool as I know from experience it wears really well. I think another perfect staple every man needs in his wardrobe is our 16gg finest merino called New Sovereign. It is the perfect year-round sweater, extremely rich in feeling, but complements a casual outfit as well as tailoring.

You offer cashmere, too. How is Theory’s cashmere superior to others?

Theory uses the finest cashmere we could find. It all comes down to great yarn with subtle detailing to make it special and yet versatile. Again the perfect fit is essential, pieces that look as good with a clean black or blue jean on the weekend or after hours, or dressed up with a suit in the office.

Looking ahead, we see that Theory is offering T-shirts made from wool.

We are offering some very fine yarn wool T-shirts. These are cut-and-sew knits, not sweaters. The emergence of these really sprang from the active world. I have been wearing wool T-shirts for performance for years for cycling, after surfing or hiking/camping. Technical companies use them for technical attributes—warmth (but also cooling), low odor, fast drying and wicking. We used the yarn for the same qualities but also gave them a modern sportswear edge. They are perfect for all occasions: layering to stay warm, worn under a suit for a more casual look, or just as a go-to tee with a little more interest than a normal tee.
